Rooting and modding your android device for the first time can be scary and overwhelming. When I picked up my HTC Hero from Sprint last January, I had no idea what rooting meant or what a ROM even was! Before I found Android I was a BlackBerry girl so this was a big change. Like a lot of Hero users, the lag while using the OS really became an issue for me. After the Android 2.1 release it was really bad. It had become such an issue it would take me almost a minute to make a call or even open my text messages. When trying to text while dodging a one year old, lagging is not an option. This is when I started researching on what it would take to root my phone. With the help of Google and a site similar to theunlockr.com (my root method is obsolete now), I was easily able to get my phone in the state I wanted it to be. I loved the idea of being able to control my phone and what it did, not the other way around. That was a huge change from any phone I’ve had in the past. I really enjoyed being able to remove applications I never used, that’s right Sprint Nascar and Football apps I’m looking at you! Now that was taken care of, I started researching what could be done with my newly rooted Hero.
This is when I found out about ROM Manager and let me tell you, it was a total gift! ROM Manager allows you to make a backup image of your phone as is. Then you are able to flash a new ROM right from the app. The great thing about the back up image is if you hate the ROM you’ve chosen, you can restore back to your old ways very quickly! I think I went through 3 ROM’s before I finally found CyanogenMod 6, and this is when I became truly happy with my Hero’s performance.

The ROM Manager even allows you to download a new ROM from the app, install from a your SD Card. Or even with a QR Code with the premium version. It’s so easy and it really takes the stress out of flashing a ROM because you can take it back if you need to. ROM Manager does have a free and a premium version. I prefer to grab the premium, it only costs $4.99. It gives you update options, as well more ROMs, support, and automatic backups. To me at that price it is worth it, and I think this is an app worth supporting! ROM Manger has made flashing my phone very easy and most importantly, it doesn’t stress me out. No more worries that I’m going to brick my phone, I trust and love my ROM Manager!
To check out ROM Manager, just search for it in your Android Market.
