A post we saw on Lookout’s Blog yesterday was just too awesome not to share with our readers! Just in case you have been living under a rock, Lookout Mobile Security provides award-winning security to protect you from viruses, malware and spyware. It also has the ability to backup and restore your data, and tools to help locate lost or stolen phones. A review AndroidGals posted earlier in the year shows how much we love AND recommend this app. If that doesn’t send you off to the Android Market to download, then this news article from Arizona might! Watch the video to get the full story on how Lookout Mobile Security not only found a stolen phone, but also the hijacked car the phone was in!
PEORIA, AZ – Technology is being credited with helping to save a young woman after she was the victim of a carjacking in Peoria.
Peoria police say two men approached the 23-year-old in the parking lot of a condo complex near 89th Avenue and Monroe Street, pointed a knife at her and then took off with her car.
Inside the victim’s 2002 Oldsmobile Alero was her cell phone.
Unbeknownst to the carjackers, there was an app on the woman’s cell phone called “Lookout” that helped police track them down in just 17 minutes.
Police say they booked suspects Jaime Jasso, Jr. and Alexis Rojas on armed robbery charges.
Alicia diVittorio of the San Francisco-based Lookout Mobile Security explained how their free app “protects your phone from viruses, malware, it backs up your data and it can also locate a lost or stolen device.”
She then explained how you can track the phone, saying, “there’s a web app component to it. When you go to mylookout.com you can enter in your login information and from there you can go to the missing device section, where you can either hit ‘locate’ or you can even make your phone ‘scream’, which emits a very loud sound even if your phone is on silent. So let’s say you lost your phone in your house you can track the phone, or for our premium users, you can remotely lock or remotely wipe your phone in the instance that it falls into the wrong hands or if you never think you are going to get your phone back you want to wipe all the sensitive data off your phone.”
According to diVittorio, her company is getting more reports of law enforcement using their app to help catch crooks.
“We are really starting to see this trend of technology helping police department solve crimes,” she said. “We definitely have had cases where Lookout has helped police departments locate lost or stolen devices and in fact we had one other carjacking incident that took place in New Jersey where a person left his phone in his car, his car was carjacked and within seven minutes the perpetrators were in handcuffs.”
diVittorio added that, “We are looking forward to working with police departments to really help people locate their stolen property. We are really excited about it , it makes us feel great, this is what makes us happy and keep doing our jobs day in and day out. We are really excited to see these stories.”
