Google Voice and Sprint, A love story!

It’s been too long since Sprint has done anything to make me a happy customer.  I have to admit these last few months at Sprint has been less then thrilling. Well, with the exception maybe of the Evo 3D announcement. Even that was only really exciting to me because I was half expecting another Echo situation, which in my opinion was a complete disaster.  I’m happy to report though that Sprint is doing something very cool with Google Voice, the merging of services is just amazing!

First it’s simple to do, login at the Google Voice site and it will give you a couple of options, either transferring your Google Voice number to Sprint or your Sprint number to Google Voice. I chose to keep my Sprint number since I didn’t have a Google Voice number before, and I hate having to change phone numbers.  A pop up box will come up letting you choose to get a call then to verify everything.  When you get connected to the cal,l enter the 2 digit number into your phone that’s displayed on your monitor……and you’re done!

I also am  texting through the Google Voice app on my Evo, which is amazing.  I work from home, so I spend more of my day then I care to admit sitting at my computer. It’s so nice to be able to read and respond to at text right from my computer.  Or even read the transcription from a voice mail, and listen to the voice mail!  It’s especially nice with the Google Chrome extension for Google Voice because an icon sits right on my browser and let’s me know if I’ve got messages!  Also you can read transcriptions of your voice mail from the Google Voice app, a service I love.

I am totally in love with this new Sprint and Google fun! Are you a Sprint customer? If so have you taken advantage of the complete set of Google Voice features yet?!

Ive tried, but was unable to do the integration. After hours on the phone with Sprint, and talking to numerous people there that seem to have no clue, I finally was told that anyone with a “corporate” or “government” discount applied to their individual account do not qualify, and Sprint has no (public anyway) plans to change this. Kind of disappointing that so little information is out there officially about this.

I’ve been using Google Voice for several months now and love it. The transcription isn’t always right, but I find it amusing to see how the server translated the message. @Jay – I have a “corporate” or “government” discount on my account and I haven’t had any issues getting it set up. It was as easy as portrayed in the article.

@Jay, I’m sorry to here that, we’ve got a corporate discount on our family plan as well and no problems. You might try talking to someone else or maybe heading into a store. I find sometimes the store people can be more helpful then the phone tech staff.

@Heidi, Glad you love it too! I love reading the transcriptions as much when they are wrong as when they are right lol.

@Jay, Rather hear that, silly me!

There is a lengthy discussion of the problem here http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice/thread?tid=7ad48f87ce6228ae&hl=en It seems to come down to how your account is flagged. If its an “individual” account you are ok. Some discounts (but not all) will mark your number as ineligible for the service. Sprint has said it was Google’s decision to do that (what they told me on the phone). Ive yet to see anything directly from Google on the subject.

If anyone else turns up having the same issue I did, we finally have an official response from Google: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice/thread?hl=en&tid=606e230d1ca92851

In summary, it should be fixed “in the next 30 days”.

  • Stacey H.

Good to know there is a response, nothing this new is going to be perfect. I’ve read stories of several issues, I’m sure Google will work with Sprint to get them fixed quickly.
