Omaha Steaks sells meat and other frozen food online and in stores. I have purchased their steaks, burgers, and hot dogs both for myself and for friends and family as gifts several times. The quality is always good, they arrive quick and fresh and the prices is pretty reasonable. When I heard they had come out with an app for monitoring steak cooking time though, I was a little skeptical. However, there is a LOT in this app to fall in love with.
The app, named Steak Time, is about far more than steak cooking times, but let’s dive into that section first. You create a timer customized to each person in your party – just add their name, the thickness of the cut, and how they want it cooked (rare, medium rare, etc.). Once all the timers are added, click the Start All Timers button and a box pops up telling you which steak or steaks to put on the grill first. The timer then counts down for you and an alarm sounds each time you’re supposed to add a steak to the grill, flip a steak, or take a steak off the grill. If you know your grill cooks a little cool or a little hot, you can customize that setting in the app. You can store the timers for later use or delete them. I do wish the app had a batch delete feature so I could delete the entire group all at once.
Steak Time isn’t just about timing perfectly cooked steaks though. It’s also about preparing for your cookout and having fun at your cookout. The app includes a set of Conversation Cards you can use to keep the conversation going, or liven it up a bit at your next party. Questions like “Who is the most famous person you have ever talked to?” should keep the stories flowing.
The Steak Time app also has loads of tools to help you get ready for your cookout or party. The Recipe index includes some really delicious recipes to enhance and accompany your steak. One of the features I loved about it is the integrated grocery list for each recipe. Click the add button to add it to the grocery list and the entire recipe is immediately on your grocery list within the app. Obviously, since it is from Omaha Steaks, they have made it easy to buy your steaks right from that list too. The buy now buttons take you to the mobile version of their web site where you can log in and shop. If all the guests at your party liked the recipe, you can email it, share it on Facebook, or Twitter from right inside the app.
The app also includes some really nice How-Tos including a nice set of videos on topics like Understanding Doneness, Marinades, Seasoning Blends and Rubs, and Perfect Grill Marks. The videos are well made and really informative.
I thought this would be an app I would download to try and then delete. However, I don’t think it’s leaving my phone any time soon. Try it out and let us know what you think in the comments? Have a great wine app to go with that steak app? We’d love to hear about it.
