Is the HTC Amaze a Keeper?

images (1)

Oh my, where do I start. As a HTC fan I am always looking and expecting for a sturdy and well-built phone. When the HTC Amaze 4G was announced for T-Mobile USA I was really impressed right away. From the awesome specs down to the design of the phone, I wouldn’t expect anything less from HTC.  So if you would please continue reading on, I will give you my first impressions of this AMAZING phone!

First things first, I hate it when people categorize the look and build of a phone to be geared towards men or woman. Having a “manly” phone just doesn’t sit well with me. A lot of the newer top of the line devices that are coming out are very large with 4.3″ screens or bigger. This size phone would most likely fall into the “manly” category because it is a bigger device overall. I say the heck with it. Although a 4″ screen is a perfect size for me personally, the HTC Amaze 4G with its 4.3″ screen isn’t too bad. With that said, coming from the Verizon Wireless’ HTC Thunderbolt, it isn’t much of a switch as far as screen size is concerned.  The weight of the phones are about the same as well.

The two  toned look of soft black or white against metal is not as manly as you would think either.  It has a nice design to it, as you can see above. Quite frankly, it is very appealing to my girly wants and needs.

My biggest question is, is the Amaze 4G enough for me to leave my beloved Thunderbolt and switch over to T-Mobile?

I decided to go to my local T-Mobile store and pick one up to try it out for the 14 day trial period. Just to see what it would be like. I picked my Amaze 4G up on the day it was released, and I must say….it’s so pretty :)  The hardware build is so solid and feels so nice in my hands. The screen quality is absolutely stunning. Lightening speeds with the dual core processor really make for a smooth and fluent user experience.

After playing with the phone a while, I must say the biggest selling point for me is the camera. The 8MP back camera and the whopping 2MP front camera are really out of this world. Being a photography buff, I totally fell head over heels for this phone just for the camera alone.  Ohhh…and not to mention the dedicated camera button on the right side of the phone!!  Well done HTC, finally I can snap my pictures without losing grip and dropping my phone!

The Amaze 4G overall is just a really well-built and amazingly designed piece of technology. With two colors to choose, white/black, the phone looks great in both. I was a little disappointed that the phone didn’t come with an external micro sd card. However, the 16GB built-in, I guess that makes up for it a little bit.

I am using my Thunderbolts 16 GB card for now, but it would have been real nice to see the Amaze come with one. The box was very small and light with accessories, only came with the wall charger and USB cable. No headphones or screen protectors included, I felt a bit put off.

However, using this phone for the last day and a half…I am thinking that this is a phone that I would keep for myself.  So far I have been able to get about 7 hrs of battery on a single charge with moderate usage, so not too bad especially for a phone with these kind of specs.

My name is Stephanie Klicpera and I am a 28 year old Gal from NY. I have an undying passion for Google and Android because of all the awesome things they have to offer. I currently own a rooted HTC Thunderbolt and do my best to make it as girly as possible. If you have a rooted Thunderbolt like me, you can also girly up your phone by using one of the themes named after me. Just look out for any theme with "Cutee" in the theme name.I started writing for AndroidGals in March of 2011 and I am loving it! I decided to get involved because I think it's important for more of us gals to learn how to utilize our Android devices and get the most out of them. I am involved in a new "girly project" over at www.teambamf.net to further educate what Android can do for us gals. To stay posted follow me on Twitter @Androidcutee

Its a solid phone, a lot of people like the design on it and its a keeper, a nice addition to the already strong T-Mobile Android lineup.

7 hours on the battery is pretty disappointing. I can get more than that on my 2 year old Incredible.

    It sounds pretty nice though.

I currently have a G2x, which I love, and plan to upgrade my wife’s phone soon to either a Galaxy SII or an Amaze. From all of the comparisons that I have run, it really seems like the Amaze is a much better choice (dedicated camera/video buttons, resolution, size, build quality, etc). I have read that the battery is pretty underwhelming, which is my only real concern. I did not realize that T-Mo offered 2 week trials. I think that may be the route that I take to see how well this phone performs.

Hi AndroidCutee, I would definitely trade your thunderbolt for the newer more sleeker, faster, Amaze. And I’m not even a Tmo fan. I myself, am going for the Epic 4G touch GSII monster with the Exynos dual core processor. Even though the screen res isn’t qhd, the super amoled plus more than makes up for it. But, for you, I think the Amaze is the way to go. Hope you’re enjoying it so far.

I’ve had the HTC Amaze 4G for two days now. I hate it! I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT! The phone is not seemingly designed for ease of use making certain simple tasks like deleting this or that difficult to do having extra steps you have to take! The battery life of the phone also sucks big time and the phone radiates in your hand way too much for my comfort zone. I hate this phone worse than my old Blackberry!

The phone feels slippery in the hand, the phone seems slow to recharge and the micro-usb or whatever it is connector does not fit easily into the port for recharging. The signal strength on it is also not as good as my old LG and the volume settings seem to need to be set at max for just about every notification and phone ring volume. The phone had been a big disappointment for me. Yes, it screams along with its’ 1.5 dual-core processor AND the camera is absolutely superb! But that’s still not enough to get my approval.
