Google Offers Gives You Another Great Way to Find Local Deals

Here at AndroidGals we want to help you get the most out of your hard-earned dollars.  Thankfully, there isn’t a shortage of Android apps to help you accomplish that. We’ve talked about the benefits of GroupOn, FourSquare Check In Discounts, and the new Deals add-on available for Bubbleator Live Wallpaper.  Well, today Google launched their own app to help you get more out of those hard-earned dollars – Google Offers.

Much like GroupOn, LivingSocial, and other daily deal types of apps and sites, Google Offers will provide you with a featured deal of the day – specific to your locale.  I live in Indianapolis and here on launch day for Google Offers there isn’t a specific offer for my location, but an offer for $15 for $25 on outdoor gear at REI’s web site is offered until my city is available.  I’ll be checking back in every day or so to see if there are more web deals for cities that haven’t yet gotten on the Google Offers bandwagon.  According to the Google Offers web site, they plan to add additional deals to the featured deal so you’ll eventually have more than one deal a day to choose from.

Once you’ve purchased a deal, you can redeem it without any printing needed.  I’ve had trouble with this with a couple of GroupOn deals I’ve purchased in the past so I’ll be interested to test this out once there are local offers available in my area.  The terms of the REI deal seem similar to what you’d see on a GroupOn or Living Social purchase.  You’ve got about six months from the date of purchase to use that specific deal and there are limits on the number you can buy.

You can subscribe to multiple cities right within the app – something you seem to have to go to the web site to do with GroupOn.  I travel a lot for business – and often to some of the same cities.  Getting notified about deals in those cities that I could take advantage of on my next trip would be a good thing.  I signed up for Orlando, FL – and just like for Indianapolis, I got email saying that they haven’t quite reached Orlando yet.  Not sure what cities are covered in the beta release, but it does seem a little limited at the moment.

One intriguing thing about the app is the QR Code scanner (the button that looks like a camera in the screenshot above) that is built-in to the app.  If I had to guess, Google will have QR codes at various retailers you can scan to see the deal for that retailer – but I can’t find documentation on that so just like how quickly new cities will be added during the beta – it’s a guess. The web site for Google Offers also says that an iPhone version is coming soon for the app.

So, is another deal app a good thing or a bad thing?  Have a favorite deal site or app we’ve not covered here at Android Gals – or think there is an update to one we’ve covered before we need to share again?  If so, let us know in the comments – we’d love to share it with other gals.
